Dave the Necromancer (Round I)

Kirrby pulls at one of the nooses and a great creak comes from somewhere within the tree.
Something strange is happening to the tree.  The bark of its trunk is beginning to peel away in places; it almost looks like it’s rotting from the inside out.  A foul stench, horribly reminiscent of putrefying flesh, begins to emanate from the decaying wood.

The transformation of the tree now seems almost complete; a narrow, tall rectangle following the line of the trunk has changed within a matter of moments from ordinary bark to a green, festering, weeping mess.

The mists part here, at the heart of the great swamp of Uberwald.  All the menace, all the evil, not to mention all the water, pours from all parts of Uberwald to collect in this one area.  The fog seems to form an almost solid wall around the circumference of this clearing, in the midst of which stands an enormous dead tree.  Once the mightiest giant of the forest, the tree now stands as a monument to the legacy of the Uberwald clan, its branches festooned with nooses, some of which still bear the remains of unfortunate adventurers who ended their lives as food for the immortals.  Wet marshland awaits to the north, south, west, southwest and northwest and the swamp lurks to the east, northeast and southeast.  Two miles to the north is the road to Uberwald.
It is a cold secundus autumn’s night with a strong breeze and medium cloud cover.
There are four obvious exits: north, east, south and west.

Thick roots weave along the roof and walls, encircling this small chamber with their massive girth.  Moist earth makes up the rest of the walls, in stark contrast to the black granite floor.  In the centre of the room squats a large black stone slab, carved with silvery runes and heaped with a massive mound of decaying flesh and bones.  Several caches of well-stripped bones are piled up here and there against the walls.  A few eerie lights, balls of greenish gas, illuminate this insalubrious place.  A narrow tunnel leads up above ground and into the marsh.

It is night and there is no moon.
The mists part here, at the heart of the great swamp of Uberwald.  All the menace, all the evil, not to mention all the water, pours from all parts of Uberwald to collect in this one area.  The fog seems to form an almost solid wall around the circumference of this clearing, in the midst of which stands an enormous dead tree.  Once the mightiest giant of the forest, the tree now stands as a monument to the legacy of the Uberwald clan, its branches festooned with nooses, some of which still bear the remains of unfortunate adventurers who ended their lives as food for the immortals.  Wet marshland awaits to the north, south, west, southwest and northwest and the swamp lurks to the east, northeast and southeast.  Two miles to the north is the road to Uberwald.
It is a cold secundus autumn’s night with a strong breeze and medium cloud cover.
There are four obvious exits: north, east, south and west.
